PSYC 2300 Readiness Assessment (DCPA)

Winter 2024

Your PSYC 2300 Readiness Assessment (DCPA) will be offered in-person using Blackboard for the Fall semester. Registration must be done 72 (business) hours in advance because you will need to complete the Tech Set Up Test found under Course Content in Blackboard to ensure you have working access before your scheduled date and time.

Who should write

Students who want to register in Psychology 2300 (PSYC 2300) who do not have the required math to register into the course (eg. one of the following exemptions listed below):

Exemptions

Exemption from the assessment is possible by completion of/providing official transcript of one of the following:

Foundations of Math 11 with “C” grade or higher (or equivalent)
Pre-calculus 11 with "C" grade or higher (or equivalent)
MATU 0410 course with “C+” grade or higher
MATU 0411 course with “C” grade or higher
MATH 1101 with “C” grade or higher

What to bring to the test

Please bring your:

Student number, photo identification(driver's license, passport, or Douglas College student card),
A pen or pencil and,
Scratch paper to be destroyed when you complete the test.

Calculators are not permitted for this test (electronic or otherwise).

Preparation for the test

This assessment is a measurement of your current academic readiness for meeting the math requirements in PSYC 2300. There is no practice test or recommended review questions.

However, any introductory or intermediate statistics or algebra textbook from a local library could provide a review of math topics required at this level.

If you feel the need for extensive review, or are uncomfortable with the math topics contained in this assessment, it may be better that you contact the Mathematics Upgrading department for an appropriate math placement.

What it tests

Questions focus on applied word problems that relate to the field of psychology that contain elements from the Mathematics 11 curriculum.

Math topics may include:

Solving equations
Simplifying expressions
Using exponents
Evaluating expressions
Factoring
Finding the equation of a line
Proportions
Inequalities
Using charts and graphs

Format of the test

This Assessment is a 27 question multiple-choice test which takes approximately 1 hour to complete.

Test results

The invigilator will email you your test results after completion of the exam. The test results go directly on the computerized student record system but you should keep your copy of the test results.

Assessments completed via Blackboard will normally have results emailed to you and entered onto your student record 72 (business) hours after completion.

Testing policy

If you score of 18 or higher, you will have successfully met the math prerequisites for entry into the PSYC 2300 course. Your student record will allow you to register into PSYC 2300 assuming you meet any other required prerequisites.

If you score 16 or 17 you will be permitted to re-write within 2 months. If you score from 13-17 you can register into MATU 0410. If you score 12 or less will be required to write the MATU assessment for placement. If you score 12 or less you will be permitted to rewrite the assessment again after 1 year.

Students may take an assessment test for admission to courses and/or programs a maximum of two times within a two year period. Students who believe extenuating circumstances exist may contact Assessment Services to request special consideration or exemption to this policy.
